How To Find Your Perfect Executive Job In Unusual Times

July 28, 2020 Nick Pritchett

Last week I joined a private executive group to share the myths and realities of what I am seeing in executive teams around the world. Here are three I shared:

MYTH 1: - No-one is hiring CEOs or Executive team members right now

MYTH 2: - It is impossible to be interviewed without meeting in person

MYTH 3: - It is the wrong time to reconnect with your network because of life/the world/the pandemic / economic challenges

Of course, you know what comes next, I tell you why all of the above isn’t true, but it is important because executives are being hired, I have never seen the SPEED of introduction to job offer happen so fast with such senior appointments, and companies are getting very creative in HOW they are evaluating their future executives, and PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU.

Follow these three crucial steps:

  • Determine what would be your perfect job

  • Wake back up your network. Who can hire you or introduce you to those who can hire you?

  • Find creative ways to catch attention, share your expertise, and shine a spotlight on your brilliance!

As I was completing my research for my new book, Rapid Growth, Done Right Lead, Influence, and Innovate for Success there was a common theme that emerged from my observations and informal conversations with executives around the world: companies that grow faster than their competition have the right leaders at the top and leading each functional area. Before considering whether your business is rapidly growing in the right way, you must first determine if you and the rest of your organization are in the right job. Rapid growth in companies happens when the right leader, leadership team, and creative, technical, and business minds are in their perfect jobs. If you are already thinking that you are in your dream job, that is brilliant;  consider whether your team members are in their perfect jobs or what changes you need to make.

Are you hiring or looking to move? - let me know I might have connections for you.

Is Being Fired Really So Terrible For You?

July 14, 2020 Nick Pritchett

There is a secret that is seldom openly discussed.

It happens far more than you realize, and you learn phenomenal lessons when it happens to you. But because it is never talked about, others don’t have the opportunity to learn from the lessons – until now, that is.

I joined John Hall from Westchester County Business Journal last week to discuss Why Being Fired Isn’t So Bad you can listen to our conversation here.

This was from my favorite chapter to write in my new book Rapid Growth, Done Right, Kogan Page. Because unlike the rest of the book filled with CEOs and leaders interviews by name, this whole chapter is anonymous! So all of a sudden the stories are more candid, detailed, and give the true reaction to what happened and why. Five leaders tell their detailed story of being fired or pushed out each covering what happened when they knew it started to go wrong, and what blunt advice they would give themselves in hindsight.

You can see the chapter recap and lessons learned here:

If you have recently been fired, laid off, furloughed, or pushed out, you can use the time to define and find your perfect job, I will share more how to do just that in next weeks VAL-uable Insights so stay tuned!

Dedicated to growing your business,

Val

Why You Really Need To Give A Damn About Your Team

July 6, 2020 Nick Pritchett

Do you feel like your boss or board really gives a damn about you? Are you showing your team you really give a damn about them?

This week the Chartered Institute of Public Relations Interviewed me about Why You Really Need To Give a Damn About Your Employees.

Mark Essayian, president of KME Systems, gives a damn about his customers and he uses that tag line in his conversations on his website and lives it every day. I featured Mark in my new book Rapid Growth, Done Right.

The reason he uses such a direct explanation is that he really does care. When he was articulating his core values, he got lost in the doublespeak of marketing and was concerned he would sound like an idiot and it would not represent him or how much he cares about his customers. He told me: “You know what? We give a damn. That is what is going on our website because it is true, despite some people telling me I couldn’t say something so blunt. I reminded them it was my company and I can get away with it, running a business in Southern California, because it truly reflects how I feel about my customers and employees. Have I lost a customer or a prospect over it? Maybe, but I view it as self-selecting. They’re not going to be a good fit for us.” Sometimes you have to make sure your intent doesn’t get lost in translation and it captures the essence of what you want to get across. Mark backs it up with how he supports his customers: “It doesn’t matter who I talk to. I can quickly explain what my company does: we provide IT services and we give a damn. If your phone system is down, it’s like my own phone doesn’t work. If your email is down, it’s like my company email is broken. If you have a business problem, I have a business problem, because I give a damn.”

In my interview with the Chartered Institute of Public Relations I gave three ways you can show you give a damn about your employees:

  • Know them

  • Keep talking even if you have no news

  • Ask what they need from you

You can read the details here.

How can you show your team you really care today?

Val
