How To Make Your Team Never Want To Leave You

December 12, 2019 Val Wright

'Tis the season to consider quitting your job.

With more time at home, space to reflect, time to review your year and plan for next year, many people return in January with a new resolve to leave their current job or company.

But the real reason people quit isn’t the job, isn’t the product, it isn’t even compensation, it is because of their immediate manager.

The break between the holidays and returning in January is a crucial time for managers of teams. Your own teams will be reflecting on the year completed and planning what is next for their customers, product development, and personal career.

But before you get too concerned who quits is far more in control than you might realize and here are three critical actions you can take before, during, and after the holidays.

Before the holiday break:

Pay attention to who you need to pay attention to who is ready for a move, maybe has outgrown their job, or is at risk for being whisked away by one of your competitors?

Set up a Team January Kick-Off meeting with your team. You can use my Galvanize Your Team as a checkpoint for the results you are creating.

Block a day of Personal Strategic Review where you can clear your mind, identify new opportunities, reflect, and challenge yourself about. Some of my executive clients choose to do this with me to allow them to have an external sounding board to explore what they and their businesses can achieve next.

During your holiday break:

Escape for some quiet thinking time with no expectations or distractions.

Consider the connection points you want to have with your team throughout 2020, both collectively and individually. Prioritize those dates and plans now.

Reflect on whether your product roadmaps, execution plans, and initiatives are running as fast and as effectively as possible, make that a focus for your January conversations if not.

After your holiday break:

Ask everyone who works directly for you what they hope to achieve in 2020 both for their business group and personally.

Ask how you can help support their career growth or success at work.

Ruthlessly manage your calendar to prioritize time with the right collections of people inside your group and across your peer groups. This could be short rapid focused conversations, or a broader strategic review, innovation experience, or deeper skills development training.

Follow this guidance and there will be no surprises when your team comes back and their resolutions will be centered around growing your business, not trying to escape it.

Reply yes please if you want to set up a conversation to talk about your upcoming year and explore how I may be able to help.

I’m in New York December 9-12, let me know if you want to connect while I am in town.

The Most Delightful Gifts For You To Get Your Team This Holiday

December 3, 2019 Val Wright

I’ve been asked by many executives what, if anything, they should buy their team this holiday. This guide will spark some ideas for what might work for your team.

1. A handwritten note - you really don’t have to spend a lot to send a meaningful gift. A thoughtful note personally from you about what you appreciate about them and thanking them for their contribution will be remembered for many years to come.

2. A gift celebrating your heritage - when I led teams I used to give the gift of Cadbury chocolate which is from my home town of Birmingham in England. It allowed me to share a little of my history with my team and I still contest that Cadbury chocolate beats any chocolate in a taste challenge!

3. Passing on a family tradition - one of my favorite gifts from my boss was a mixing bowl and a handwritten recipe of a cake that her grandmother used to make. It was incredibly touching to hear her story of baking cakes with her family and how we could continue the tradition.

4. A personalized experience that matters - when you know your team you can surprise them with a truly meaningful gift. Whether you are aware that they always wanted to try golf, know their favorite restaurant, or that they love skiing you can choose personalized gifts that are specific to them.

5. Support a local business - if you visit your local art markets you will meet entrepreneurs that are creating innovative products right on your doorstep. Maybe you will find a unique gift that is being made right on your doorstep and will provide some additional marketing for the local entrepreneur too.

What has been your most memorable gift you have given or received at work? I’d love to hear the best or worst examples!

I will be in New York December 10-12 speaking at the Women of The Channel Leadership Summit East alongside Bobbi Brown and Rent The Runway’s CEO Jennifer Hyman – Let me know if you want to connect while I am in town!

When You Unexpectedly Make A Mistake

November 28, 2019 Val Wright

Ever have someone confused, shocked, or disappointed by what you just said?

It happened to me last week. Thankfully I tell all my clients I want them to be as candid with me as I am with them and I found out about it pretty fast. This gave me the opportunity to explain what I really meant and apologize for creating confusion.

Sometimes the words we think we are saying aren’t those that come out of our mouths. Just like a stage manager at the theatre who reminds an actor if they mess up their lines, you need people around you who will let you know if your message isn’t as expected or doesn’t land the way you had hoped. (It also helps if you have written a book, because then people can say –“hey that isn’t how she usually explains that – she really means this!”…)

How you respond when someone gives you feedback will determine if you ever get feedback from that person again. Remember this:

  • Stay curious

  • Don’t deny how they heard you or experienced you

  • Ask yourself if it is feedback you want to ignore, consider, or embrace

  • If you make a mistake, apologize, correct it, and move on. Don’t excessively dwell

  • Have a sounding board of advisors who you can call and get advice

Do you have people you trust giving you feedback just when you need it?

I will be in New York December 10-12 speaking at the Women of The Channel Leadership Summit East alongside Bobbi Brown and Rent The Runway’s CEO Jennifer Hyman – Let me know if you want to connect while I am in town!
